What is Data Modelling?

Initial results from two direct questions. (Posted 2 December 04)

Respondents were asked an open question: “What is data modelling?” and a forced choice question asking them to choose one of two options.

The open question was coded as follows:

0. Does not incorporate a position on Design vs Analysis characterisation
1. Strongly supports Analysis characterisation
2. Somewhat supports Analysis characterisation
3. Supports both characterisations (perhaps depending on context)
4. Somewhat supports Design characterisation
5. Strongly supports Design characterisation

Here is the breakup of the 104 valid responses.

The forced choice question was:

Which better describes data modelling? (circle the most appropriate response):

(1). Describing the data requirements of an organisation or part of an organisation

or

(2). Designing data structures to meet the requirements of an organisation or part of an organisation.

Here are the results:

Note that some respondents chose “both” (shown in the chart as option 3) even though this option was not given. It's reasonable to assume that more would have done so if that third choice was offered.
