Is Data Modeling Better Characterized as Description or Design? Graeme Simsion's four year research project addressing the above question was completed in 2006. The results were published in his PhD thesis Data Modeling: Description or Design (University of Melbourne) and in the book Data Modeling Theory and Practice. A paper summarising the key findings, Data Modeling- Description or Design by Simsion, Milton and Shanks, was published in Information and Management, May 2012. Graeme is no longer involved in data modeling research, but is happy to present 1-2 hour seminars on the results of the above study, most recently to DAMA Chapters in Des Moines, Iowa and Mineapollis, Minnesota in June 2012.
